A Little Safari Dream: A Nursery with Heritage and Heart

A Little Safari Dream: A Nursery with Heritage and Heart

I recently had the absolute pleasure of designing a nursery for a special baby boy.
The family lives in the USA, but Dad is proudly South African with a love for the
bush. When they came to me, their wish was simple but special: to create a space
that would reflect his roots and their shared love of nature.
We began with the feature wall—wallpapered in a soft grey and white, the design
beautifully detailed with leopards, monkeys, and bushveld trees. It brings a gentle
sense of the wild to the room, whimsical enough for a nursery, yet timeless as he
grows.
To keep the room calm and cosy, we introduced a creamy, textured rocking chair—
perfect for quiet cuddles and midnight feeds. It’s a piece that anchors the space and
invites comfort.
One of my favourite details? The tall giraffe standing lookout over the cot adding a
playful nod to the African landscape. It feels like a gentle guardian in the room—watchful, sweet, and full of character.
And of course no nursery is complete without a few finishing touches, and in this
case, a hand-knitted grey blanket added just the right amount of warmth and texture.
It drapes beautifully over the cot and feels like a quiet hug—lovingly made, and
deeply personal.
This nursery is more than just a beautifully designed space—it’s a tribute to heritage,
to family stories, and to the places we hold close, even from far away. Creating a
little piece of South Africa in the heart of the USA was such a joy, and I’m so
honoured to have played a part in welcoming this little one into the world.
